Why some men can't grow beards

Since ancient times, having beards has always been a sign of manliness, maturity and wisdom. However, some men can't grow beards and there is a growing concern why they don't have beards while their peers have.

There are scientific explanations that could reveal and throw some lights upon this issue.

In an interview with Elite Daily, Dr Amy McMichael, a dermatologist explained genetics could the reason why they can't grow beards. Their hair follicles are not dense such that hair growth becomes awful low.

“The largest factor that determines beard growth is really genetics,” Some men simply have genetics such that hair follicles are sparse or hair growth is slow,” McMichael noted.

Some have always thought that it is due to their testosterone level. Low levels of testosterone has nothing to do with sparse beards and it doesn't signal the growth of hair in any way.

“Testosterone does play a role in the signalling of hair growth, but the system does have limits,” says McMichael.

However, it was revealed that people with thick beards may be more sensitive to testosterone than their counterparts.

Dr Kristen Irene Lo Sicco , a dermatologist stated that transgender men taking testosterone supplements can grow beards. However, this doesn't mean that when you take those supplements you will grow beards as the effects may vary from one person to another.

“Transgender men see the effects of [external] testosterone. Hair follicle sensitivity to androgen a [including testosterone] varies with facial hair follicles enlarging first above the lips and on the chin,” she notes

Dr McMichael notes that poor beard growth has nothing to do with a low level of testosterone.

In a nutshell,  beards growth are determined by your genetics and it is mainly associated with family history.
